Open, edit and save any text file
How it works
Drop text or code files anywhere on the page, or press Open: each one opens in its own tab, with its colours: the language is recognised from the file name, and you can change it in the Language list. Type as in any editor: several cursors with Ctrl+click, a column selection with Alt+drag, Tab to indent. Find (Ctrl+F) and Replace (Ctrl+H) work with case matching, whole words and regular expressions. Format tidies the indentation of JSON, XML, HTML, CSS and SQL. Save (Ctrl+S) writes the file back in the encoding and line breaks it had, shown at the bottom.
Questions
Are my files sent anywhere?
No. The file is read and edited by your browser; the page is not allowed to contact any other site, and nothing is kept once the tab is closed. Once the page is open you can even disconnect: only the colours of a language you have not opened yet need the connection, the first time.
Which files can I open?
Any plain text file up to 50 MB: code, configuration (.ini, .yaml, .env, .xml), logs, CSV, subtitles, scripts, Markdown… The encoding is detected (UTF-8, UTF-16, Windows-1252). Word, PDF, images or programs are not text and are refused.
How do I save my changes?
Press Save or Ctrl+S. In Chrome and Edge, a file opened with Open or dropped on the page is saved in place (the browser asks for permission the first time); Save as picks another name or folder. Other browsers download a copy. The encoding and the line breaks (Windows CRLF or Unix LF) stay as they were.
How do I find and replace?
Ctrl+F opens the search bar above the text, Ctrl+H puts you straight in its Replace field. Tick “match case”, “by word” or “regexp” as needed; F3 and Shift+F3 go to the next and previous match, “replace all” changes every match at once, and Ctrl+Z undoes it. With “regexp”, $1, $2… in the replacement insert the captured groups.
What does Format do?
It re-indents the whole file: one JSON value, XML or HTML tag, CSS declaration or SQL clause per line, nesting shown by the indent. Text inside strings, comments, <script> and <pre> is not touched. JSON must be valid first. Ctrl+Z brings the previous layout back.
Can I work on several files at once?
Yes: each file opened or dropped gets a tab above the text (several at once with Open or a drop), and New adds an empty one. A dot marks a tab with unsaved changes. Click a tab to switch, or use Alt+Page Down / Alt+Page Up; × or a middle click closes it (Alt+W for the current one), asking first if changes are not saved. Each tab keeps its own undo history, search and language. Opening a file that is already open goes back to its tab.
What else can I do with the text?
Change case (Aa button) turns the selection, or the word under the cursor, into UPPERCASE, lowercase or Title Case. Lines sorts lines A → Z or Z → A, removes duplicate or empty lines and trailing spaces, duplicates a line, converts tabs to spaces and back — on the selected lines, or on the whole file when nothing is selected. View turns on word wrap (Alt+Z), shows spaces, tabs and line ends, folds or unfolds every block, and picks a light or dark theme; 100% sets the text size (also Ctrl+mouse wheel). # (Ctrl+G) goes to a line. At the bottom, click the encoding or CRLF / LF to save the file in another encoding or with other line breaks. Everything can be undone with Ctrl+Z.
