Compare two texts

Differences

The comparison appears here as soon as both boxes contain text.

How it works

Paste the original text on the left and the modified one on the right, or drop a text file on either box. The comparison updates as you type: deleted parts are on a light red background, added parts on light green, unchanged lines stay plain. Choose By line, By word or By character to see changes as precisely as you need, Side by side or Unified for the layout, and tick the filters to ignore extra spaces or upper and lower case. The arrows jump from one difference to the next in long texts.

Questions

Are my texts sent anywhere?

No. The comparison is computed by your browser; the page is not allowed to contact any other site, and nothing is saved. You can compare contracts, code or configuration with secrets safely.

By line, by word or by character: which one should I use?

By line suits code and configuration files: whole lines are marked. By word suits prose: inside a changed line, only the words that changed are crossed out or highlighted. By character finds a single typo, a missing letter or an invisible accent.

What do the filters ignore exactly?

Ignore extra spaces treats any run of spaces or tabs as one space and ignores spaces at the start and end of lines (useful after a reformatting). Ignore case treats “Paris” and “PARIS” as the same. When texts only differ by what is ignored, the tool says so.

Can I compare files?

Yes, any text file up to 5 MB: drop it on a box or use Open a file (code, CSV, JSON, Markdown, subtitles, logs…). Word, PDF or images are not text: copy their text and paste it instead.

How do I move through a long comparison?

Use the Previous / Next difference arrows above the result (or Alt+↑ / Alt+↓). Long runs of unchanged lines are folded, keeping three lines of context; click one to unfold it. Side by side, both columns scroll together.
